The FCO’s consular service
is a major operation. Every hour of every day their consular
staff around the world are helping British nationals.
It is one of the most important parts of the Government's
foreign policy. In 2001, the 1,600 consular staff helped
over 52,000 British travelers and issued over 434,000
passports. The Travel section of their website contains
a wealth of information for anyone planning a trip overseas. |

Health insurance is very often
one of the last items on a traveller’s checklist,
yet it is perhaps the most important of all.
People from Britain tend to forget that they may have
to pay thousands of pounds in medical costs if they fall
ill or have an accident outside this country. This is
true even in countries, such as EEA states, with which
the United Kingdom has mutual health care agreements ¨C
because, even in such cases, the arrangements may not
cover all the expenses you can incur. And the cost of
bringing a person back to the UK, in the event of illness
